They take lives, houses and devastate communities all over the world.

The tsunamis are huge waves usually triggered by earthquakes occurring under the ocean or near the coast. They can also be generated by volcanic eruptions, underwater landslides or coastal rock falls, or even a large asteroid.

Did you know that the term "sunami" is a Japanese word composed of "tsu" (port) and "nami" (vague)?

They are unpredictable, and often arrive without shouting station.

The first front-run sign is that the sea begins to withdraw, then the water returns to fall on the coast in the form of waves up to 30 meters high and travel more than 800 km/h.

More than 70% of the tsunamis already recorded occurred in the Pacific Ocean around the "Pacific Fire Belt", an area prone to frequent earthquakes.

The devastating tsunami in December 2004 in the Indian Ocean resulted in nearly 277,000 deaths in 14 countries. Caused by an underwater earthquake with a power equivalent to 23,000 atomic bombs, it was the most deadly tsunami in recent decades. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand were the hardest hit.

In the Asia-Pacific region, thousands of people lost their lives in tsunamis. The lack of knowledge, awareness and preparedness has contributed to the large number of deaths and injuries.
