The Supreme
As part of the third edition of the Festival de Tragédies, Charles Tordjman has heard the words of the ancient poet Eschyle in his new creation. Written in 465 before our era, the tragedy of the Suppliants tells the escape of the fifty daughters of Danaos, destined to be forcibly married to their cousins. To escape these incessant unions, they cross the sea and land in Argos in order to seek refuge in King Pélasgos. In the face of them, a major political dilemma: to welcome them in the name of the sacred law, at the risk of causing war, or to deliver them to their pursuers.
For Charles Tordjman, to stage Les Suppliantes is to resonate this 2500-year-old cry, this song of unsubmission against brutality and domination. In a deliberately sleek, archaic and contemporary form, the polyphonic voices of this choir of young exiled women deploy through a set of TVs and videos. The tragedy of Eschyle will sound like a timeless echo: that of the women who refuse, that of the exiles who knock at the gates, that of the peoples who are begged to choose between fear and hospitality.
