Driss Aroussi
The word magic is the image analogy, as it is said, we can say that since the invention of the photographic image our imaginary has ceased to build through the prism of the reproduction of the real by optical, mechanical and chemical processes. In the shadow of photography, the invisible technological complexity of the camera (black box) makes imaginary and then we make photographs as by enchantment. In my artistic practice I use what makes it possible to reproduce the real, and I am interested in the process that makes the image come, but can also alter it.
For several years I have been working on the issue of photography by making images that question the physiology of these. Thus I manufacture devices, hybrid tools, which allow to produce visual forms, then pushing in its cuts the program of the camera ("for a philosophy of photography" Vilém Flusser). The artistic proposals here are a non-exhaustive panorama of experiments and DIY around the photograph. In a permanent flow of images with multiple values records, how do we reinvent the photograph?
Driss Aroussi lives and works in Marseille. His artistic work is polysemic, borrowing several avenues of research, navigating between experimentation and form close to the documentary thus articulating a form of political commitment to invent from the place where he is located. A part of his work explores the issues of the process that makes the image come true. The other questions manual work in the contexts of yards, agrarian areas and dry places. He participated in exhibitions at the Centre Photographique Île de France, at Crac 19 Belfort, at Art-o-Rama, at the Salon de Montrouge, and conducted artist residences with the French Institute of Mali-Bamako, the Lebanese University of Architecture and Beautiful Arts of Beirut, Kiito & Airk Art Centre in Kobe and the International City of Arts Paris. He has obtained several scholarships for artistic research including the Creation of DRAC PACA, support for an artistic project of the CNAP, AFAC’s Visual Arts Grant, etc.
His films were screened at the Clermont Ferrand festival, at Visions du Réel, at IFFR, etc.
His artistic work is present in the books "50 years of French photography" and " Contre-culture dans la photographie contemporaine" by Michel Poivert, "Play Against Devices" by Marc Lenot
