Write town: 850 years of archives and urban memory
In 1176, a charter of the Count of Provence recognized the inhabitants of Nice as an autonomous community, marking the birth of the city and its written memory. Central part of the exhibition Write the city, it opens 850 years of urban history, from medieval emancipation to integration in France.
The Niçois « treasure of charters » illustrates the major stages of the development of Nice, under the domination of Provence, savoyarde, sarde and French.
This anniversary also highlights the essential role of archivists, who keep and transmit these documents, allowing the history of Nice and its inhabitants to continue until today.
