In 1945, the Second World War was over, but Grace's husband, gone to fight, did not return from the front. In a huge Victorian home isolated on Jersey Island, this pious young woman raises her two children alone, Anne and Nicholas, according to the strict principles of her religion. Achieved with a strange evil, these cannot be exposed to the light of the day. They therefore live recluse in this mansion which must constantly remain in the dark. When three new servants come to live with Grace and her children, they must bend to a vital rule: no door should be opened before the previous one was closed. Yet someone will disobey this order. Therefore, Grace, her children and all those around them will have to bear the consequences.
