The site of Pompei keeps talking about him at every discovery from the ongoing excavations in the layers of volcanic materials that buried him or those carried out stratigraphically under the levels of 79 of our era. Pompéi also continues to be rediscovered remotely from the site, in private or public archives repositories, or in abandoned libraries.
One of the most recent examples of these archival explorations is a set of drawings attributed to Louis-Nicolas-Marie Destouches, acquired on the art market by Pierre Pinon in the years 2010, and now preserved at the Institut d’histoire de l’art de Paris. This unpublished collection, returned to the light 200 years after its realization, is composed of surveys of the work carried out in Pompeii and Naples in the 1816-1817s. L. Destouches, who won the Grand Prix d’Architecture in 1814, was one of the first architects and designers who made their way
in the kingdom of Naples for
reproduce the antiques during their stay as residents of the Villa Medici. Perspectives, plans, views... the repertoire of the achievements of the French Academy in Rome is varied and reveals the interests of each architect.
