Healing sphinges

François-Honoré Jacob, from an illustrious dynasty of cabinetmakers, made many furniture in style influenced by the lesson of Antiquity, as evidenced by this guerrilla.

In a round shape and covered with a white marble top moulded, this guerrilla executed between 1796 and 1803, is equipped with a rich ornamentation in golden bronze to the belt, representing an antique scene of riders. It rests through five winged sphinges, on a starry terrace with a Medici vase with golden bronze pampres attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). The furniture contains, on the frame of wood supporting the marble, the stamp of Jacob Frères, rue Meslée and an iron mark with the crowned N and the abbreviation TUIL., a sign of belonging to the furniture of Napoleon 1st at the Palais des Tuileries. There is also the mention of the Château de Villeneuve l’Etang, residence of the Duchess of Angouleme, in a circle surrounding a double coat of arms with the three flowers of lys and the crown.
