Pair of armchairs and three chairs

The gold-backed wooden armchair, back-to-back, back-to-back to the trout and front-to-double balustre feet, is a classic form of Jacob’s furniture of which there are several variants.

Those preserved in the Masséna Museum are part of a set made up of a pair of armchairs and three chairs of the same invoice from the furniture of the Parisian hotel of Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès, Duke of Parme (1753-1824) and, from 1821, of the Château d’Eu, residence of the family of Orleans. This explains the presence on the woods of the armchair of an old label, probably of origin, bearing the manuscript mention Prince Cambacérès and the brand of the castle of Eu. The five pieces of furniture were designed by the Jacobs, one of the most remarkable dynasties of cabinetmakers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.

The armchair can be designated as having been ordered to the house Jacob by Cambacérès himself, given the mark Jacob D rue Meslée.
