The Salon des Portraits

As it is used, an enfilade of lounges occupies the exhibits at noon.
Three large portraits decorate this piece:
- on the north wall: Napoleon 1st in the sacre costume, according to Baron Gérard (1805),
- on the wall is Napoleon III and Eugénie after Winterhalter (1853).
The mother of the Prince of Essling had held the duties of a great mistress of the Empress’s House.
At the end of his life, Eugénie owned a villa in Cap Martin and was often received in these salons, during brilliant receptions.

The castle of Govone
Located about 50 kilometers from Turin, the castle of Govone is a medieval fortress remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1819-1820 Charles-Félix (1765-1831) and his wife Marie-Christine (1779-1849) made the interior decor rework.
In 1898, the town of Govone sold furniture and decorative elements. A large part is bought by the Prince of Essling to adorn the villa Masséna.
The doors, the trumpets of this living room and their frames come from the Queen's room. The frescoes of the ceiling are a replica of those of the same room, works by Carlo Pagani and Andréa Piazza (1819).
In 1821 Charles-Félix became king of Sardinia and reigned on Nice. The royal couple made two long stays from November 1826 to January 1827, then from November 1829 to March 1830.
