Composed in 1733 while Haendel is at the top of his glory, Orlando is a singular opera: few characters – but all prodigiously encamped –, a tight action, and a dizzy exploration of passions. Love, jealousy, illusion, guilt are confronted to the famous scene of madness of the second act, where Haendel makes his hero wander between hallucination and fury in a music of a striking modernity. For Mariame Clément, the issue is not so much that of transposition as that of the truth of emotions. Between the knight dimension and subjective perception, his staging will evolve between myth and contemporaneity, revealing a hero torn between love and duty, true Don Quichotte of today, tossed between reason and passion. With a first-rate vocal team, Jean-Christophe Spinosi will like no other make us immerse in this unique musical and human universe.
