Certification of the beaches
MEEDAT, ANEL and ANMSCCT have jointly implemented the certification approach of the bathing water quality management system.
The goal is to help those responsible for bathing water in the face of this regulatory development, including:
- Achieving and publishing the swimming water profile (before the summer season 2011);
- Public involvement and information (from 2011);
- The hardening of bathing water quality thresholds (dès 2011);
- A new classification of bathing waters in 4 classes: excellent, good, sufficient or insufficient (after summer season 2013 based on the rankings of the last 4 years);
The objectives of certification of the bathing water quality management system are the health quality of water and the transparency of information by:
- the establishment of a relevant method of monitoring and forecasting pollution;
- taking the necessary measures to improve the quality of bathing water;
- information in full transparency of the public on the quality of bathing water (classification, results of analysis, census, duration of the seaside season, nature of the site, pollution risks, cyanobacterior details, a priori information on risk situations, posteriori information in case of pollution and closure...).
Thus, from a common repository, an independent body accredited for ISO 14001 certifications will audit the swimming water quality management system of the municipality, including the existence of parts and procedures designed to:
- to bathing water control,
- identification of potential pollution sources,
- the prevention and protection of users,
- to improve the quality of bathing water,
- to public information.
The certification procedure works by 3 years
Health protection of swimming
The health protection of bathing is organized around 2 separate missions aiming at the good quality of bathing water: bacteriological control and cleaning of the water plan
Bacteriological control of bathing waters
It is organized under the control of DDASS and corresponds to a bacteriological analysis of 3 parameters (Escherichia coli, fecal streptococcal streaks and total coliforms) witnesses to an organic contamination of bathing water originating mainly from the sewage network.
Samplings are weekly from 1 June to 30 September and are made at 27 bathing sites and 3 "out of bathing" sites.
This check represents approximately 600 annual analyses to the city of Nice.

Cleaning the water plan
It is made daily in the summer period thanks to the cleaning boats and corresponds to the collection of floating waste and the watering of the beaches by a sea water cannon.
In addition to this cleaning, every year a cleaning of the seabed on the first 10 meters is carried out by the city of Nice. 8 m3 of waste is collected annually.
Public information on the quality of bathing water is provided through several information materials:
Display of results of bacteriological analyses
Paper version at each emergency station on the beaches and in the main town hall.
On the website of the city of Nice.
