The house of Bernarda ALBA

At the death of his second husband, Bernarda Alba imposed on his five daughters eight years of mourning and confinement. In this house cut off from the world, crushed by heat and silence, desires confront the maternal authority, social conventions and the fear of scandal. The invisible arrival of Pepe le Romano, promised to the eldest but loved by the youngest, appeals to jealousies and makes the order imposed. Under the direction of Sara Mangifesta, the Anima Company is not seeking to reconstitute rural Spain from the 1930s. The house becomes a mental space, the metaphor of all systems that enclose individuals: traditions, family or religious injunctions, control of the bodies and fear of the outside gaze. Bernarda herself appears less as a simple tyrannical figure than as the product of an order that she has profoundly interiorized and defends in the name of honour. Through this family tragedy, Lorca asks with a striking modernity our relationship to freedom, desire and standard. An intense work on fear that governs, but also on the irrepressible need to love, exist and choose one’s own life.
