The Spirit of Kashmir
Following a prestigious line of Kashmir musicians, Abhay Rustum Sopori is the heir of more than three centuries of tradition of the santour and Sufiana Gharana. Known as “an exceptional artist” by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), he perpetuates the legacy of his father, the maestro Bhajan Sopori, while leading a brilliant international career.
At the crossroads of Indian classical music, Sufi music and folk traditions of Kashmir, Abhay Rustum Sopori has performed in many festivals around the world. In particular, he directed the concert Ehsaas-e-Kashmir, alongside the conductor Zubin Mehta, and composed Haftrang, a fusion work created by the Bavarian State Orchestra, thus contributing to the international influence of Kashmir music. He will be accompanied to the tabla by Nihar Mehta, a renowned artist who has been in France since 2003. A musician certified by the Indian government, he has performed in prestigious European theatres, notably in the Paris Philharmonie, and has collaborated with great music figures such as Zakir Hussain, Jordi Savall and Terry Riley. The santour is a former string instrument hit, probably from Persia, although ancient Indian texts mention a similar instrument, the shata tantri veena.
