The Incandescente and the Gang of Blood Shredders
Last season, Louise Chevillotte played Simone de Beauvoir in "Thérèse et Isabelle". We find her for her first stage. Inspired by Claudie Hunzinger's eponymous novel and his son Robin's documentary film, she revived the passionate correspondence between Emma and Marcelle, two young girls from the early twentieth century. On the stage, four comedians embody these emancipated, bold and free young women, revealing an unsuspected modernity in the heart of France in the 1920s.
Three years after her meeting with Emma, Marcelle grabs tuberculosis and is placed in a sanatorium. This is where she meets three other girls. To them four, they form “the gang of blood spitters”, entrusted by tuberculosis and love. Through these crossed voices, the incandescent path of these teenage girls is drawn which, when death approaches, choose to love and live without waiting - because the desire, written Claudie Hunzinger, is “even more contagious than the disease”.
Plunging into this extraordinary material, the stage designer makes life the fulgurating language of Marcelle’s letters, the dizziness of the bodies and desire, but also the locking of the sanatorium and tuberculosis that causes death. These four students from the beginning of the 20th century appear to us in a thousand leagues from the docile and erased images that our era assigns to those who preceded us.
IntentionIn 2023, I discovered the documentary Ultraviolette and the Gang of blood spitters. I get upset. The director introduces me to his mother, the author Claudie Hunzinger, who wrote a novel from the same story, L’incandescente. I devour the book, and ask for permission to adapt it to the theatre. Claudie Hunzinger gives me access to the original letters, and I then build a new version of this story, at the crossroads of the novel and the documentary.At the origin of my fascination for this story, there is the crazy freedom of a teenager in the early last century. The virtuoso literary material that Marcelle gives us is a new legacy: a hundred years ago, some girls of the people dreamed of other things than marriage and family life. Writing and literature have opened the doors of emancipation. By sharing these missing stories, I want this show to help restore a line of creative and free women. Thought for four comedians, adaptation is interested in writing as a means of survival: writing to survive the distance in love, survive confinement, survive death.
