Pierre and Claire Lannes are questioned in turn about the murder of Marie-Thérèse Bousquet, Pierre's deaf and mute cousin, who was also their cleaning wife and cook. Opening Duras’ book is falling into a swell, it is discovering something that concerns me despite me, which is part of me. It is immersed in the meanders of the human psyche, its violence, passions lived or imagined. It is not the various fact that fascinates me, that is what Duras in fact, slipping from real to fiction, from individual to universal, from daily to myth. Through her literary skill, she transforms this raw material from the real into a drizzy, intimate drama, sounding the abyss. Duras is far beyond the justice of men. What interests him is knowing who killed and why. By discovering L’Amante Anglais, the characters immediately appeared to me. I saw to their skin, their tense body, their enigmatic presence. Far from lyricism, the text unfolds a precise, refined, infinitely modern style. Duras dissects the character almost clinically, writing is wolf. The dramatic form gives the illusion of an investigation. But when everything lights up, everything goes so suddenly under our feet. Émilie Charriot
