From Zola, Anne Barbot had already adapted "Assommoir". This time she turns to the agricultural world, from which she comes, and dives us rawly close to a reality rarely approached in the theatre. Great popular show, "La Terre" paints a striking portrait of modernity of the issues of the contemporary agricultural crisis.
We are at Zola in the second half of the 19th century, at the dawn of an industrial and social revolution. It is in this tense context that old Fouan, too old to cultivate, resigns to donate his lands to his three children, precipitating the family in a war of succession. Over the seasons, the scenes link in the setting of the family farm open to the barn at hay: marriage, meals, labour, harvest... The eight actors embodi intensely the flesh, sweat and breath of the earth.
Intention
It is through the intimacy of the family clan that I want to celebrate the land and make the voice of the peasants in the midst of the agricultural crisis. I will reveal the love of the peasants for their land and their desire for independence, the harshness of the environment that weighs on them. I will go back to the Fouan family to study his clanic mechanics and understand the internal reasons that push her to act. It is at the heart of generational conflicts that I want politics to be revealed. Through this family history, I will try to answer this question posed by Zola: the great property or the small one, which of the two will prevail?Zola wanted to make the most living work possible. That’s all we’re going to look for. This naked humanity will be both tender and hard, comical and tragic. Then I will show what is, without judgment, I will give body to his will to stage people who are not the expected heroes of literature. I come from a family of workers and peasants, these stories are part of me. My research appeals to the sensitive, to the strong memories, to the unspeakable, it is imprint of life, struggles and fever.Anne Barbot
