Resurrection [A case of conscience]
In "Resurrection", it is a question of a young man of good family who leads a life of pleasure in a large city and finds himself sworn in at the trial of a woman accused of murder. He recognizes his youthful love, formerly serving his family. He abused her and put her pregnant before abandoning her. She became a prostitute. Desirous to redeem his fault, he tries to innocent him, but she refuses his help to compel him to face the consequences of his acts. A theatre of consciousness, between quest for redemption and possibility of forgiveness.
Less emblematic than other works by Léon Tolstoy, "Resurrection" finds under the feather of Leïla Slimani a striking resonance with our time. Alongside the director Simon Delétang, the actress takes advantage of this story to propose an engaged and contemporary adaptation. Through the figure of Nekhlioudov, an idealist shared between the enjoyment of his privileges and his desire for justice, the show questions the violence of class relations.
Intention"Resurrection" by Tolstoy is a text in which all my obsessions are present. I am passionate about this book because it explores the issue of good intentions. Nekhlioudov is an idealist, he “was doing good with the fruits of evil”. In this, it appears to me as a deeply contemporary character. He embodies this figure of bourgeois who wants to “repare the world” but whose status and privileges are constantly destroying it. Contemporary, also, because it is the incarnation of a certain masculinity, enjoying impunity. Leïla Slimani
When I discovered the novels of Leïla Slimani, I had the intuition that the rigor of his style and his obsessions would lend themselves to dramatic writing. After exploring unpublished manuscripts carrying strong subjects, Leïla told me about a novel by Tolstoo more unknown than others, Resurrection, whose subject was of a vibrant modernity. Far from us the idea of proposing an era version, it became clear to us that, in the light of our two personalities, we wanted to propose a show committed to current social issues. I had a scenic desire to be able to explore the space of a court to make it the place of appearance of past events and of the resolutions present. I will have the great responsibility to make the already proteiform talent of Leïla Slimani shine in the theatre and to serve as best as possible the strength of his words. Simon Delétang
