A small hamlet of the Nièvre, cut from the rest of the world. The testimonies of three women, three neighbors, three friends, who “don’t have much to tell,” they said. And yet, they deliver, discreet, modest. These fates that we might consider banals will find here a space of emancipation by the game. What if Christiane didn’t want to have a fries tonight at the ball? What if Eugenie didn’t jump this class in the preparatory class? What if Béatrice didn’t go to work that day when an unknown person had crashed in front of her house? Ève Pereur captures in this account the fragile beauty of the coincidences of life.
“Can the beating of wings of a butterfly in Brazil cause a tornado in Texas?” With this quote, Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist, explains that by infimous modification of some variables, chaotic behavior can appear. This is the butterfly effect.
IntentionThe writing of this piece starts at the gathering of testimonies. I went to speak with these women, Eugénie Niez, Christiane Marquez and Béatrice Lélu. The first is my grandmother, the others are her neighbors. They agreed to surrender because they saw me grow, because they trusted me. Through their journey, we realize the gap between the inhabitants of the countryside and the cities. The question of the place of the artist and his responsibility in a fractured society here between rurality and urbanization is at the centre of the project. I wish to give access to the word and desires of those we do not question. I will tell their real life and the life they could have lived. I will tell a life that words have let me imagine, I will tell a life with dreams that I have planned for them. I will tell their lives and their brilliance, the one they have suggested, overflew, buried. For my first staging, I chose to talk about this generational, geographic and social divide, never intersecting lives that would only gain to enrich one another. Loser
