Through their shared love for music and circus, Danny and Pepijn Ronaldo link their resemblances and differences. Danny, the clown of the old school, gathers his memories and tries to regain past glory; Pepijn, a young, passionate artist, seeks to reconcile tradition and modernity. The father constantly challenges the son to do better than him. The roots of Circus Ronaldo go far back in time; Danny and Pepijn belong respectively to the sixth and seventh generation of circassian artists. Under the sign of the seven, sacred figure, they present a tribute to this past, celebrate the memory, transmission and shared pleasure of the circassian art, in a touching, joyous and luminous exchange.
IntentionMy father told me so often about my great-grandfather who had to close his walking wooden theatre after the stocking krach of 1930. The war that followed definitely sounded the glas of the impressive theatrical caravan. In March 2020, just before the first of Sono io ?, the doors suddenly closed everywhere – in the sense clean as to the figurative. The circus has always sought its way by sneaking between wars, famines and pandemics. The containment forced us to conduct a deeper introspection, to push our inner limits. And the more we sound, the better we find ourselves. They go on stage together, father and son. Two clowns looking for their resemblances. Looking for their singularity. From what separates them and binds them. It will be an intense quest, a perfect reflection. Because everyone wears his own mask. A father's mask that conceals all doubts, sorrows, to any weakness. The mask of a son who is still very malleable, but hides every vulnerable facet of the child. And it will be a fun and familiar quest. Captivating and moving.
