Enoch Arden
In an English port, Enoch Arden, former merchant fisherman, wife Annie Lee, also courted by Philipp Ray. After seven happy years, poverty and disease settle in the home. In order to meet the needs of his family, Enoch returned to the sea with his former captain. The boat is wrecked and is missing for ten years. As he manages to return to his native land, he learns that Annie remarried with Philipp. Enoch will only reveal his identity on his death bed...
The moving story of this dead raw sailor inspired Richard Strauss a magnificent, sober and effective music. The Duo Hands, formed by pianists Alexandra Roshchina and Alain Jacquon, joins the actor Hervé Van der Meulen and offers an adaptation for reciting and piano with four hands, giving life to the poem by Alfred Tennyson.
IntentionAt the frontier of the theatre and concert, this work makes speech and music dialogue in a narrative of great intensity, where the piano becomes a partner of the voice and actor of the drama. The project is a real overall work. The voice does not overlook the music, it joins it. The piano does not comment on the text, it reveals silences, impulses and internal fractures.
