Ivanov
"Ivanov" confronts us with the fate of a man cultivated and sensitive but deeply exhausted by life: a ruined landowner, whose wife falls seriously ill. Enlightened in an existence stifled by snails, hypocrisy and prejudices, the lucid Ivanov falls in love with Sacha, the daughter of one of his knowledge. Amid the impending death of his wife and the exaltation of a nascent love, his inability to act and his disillusionment lead him to a dead end.
Jean-François Sivadier grabbed "Ivanov" by Anton Tchekhov, a great classic of Russian theatre, with all the demands and freedom of tone that characterize him. A fan of the troupe theatre, he gathers ten actors on the stage, including his faithful, including Nicolas Bouchaud and Norah Krief. It is with humour and blackness that he reveals the subtleties of Chekhov’s play, at the crossroads of drama and comedy.
Stucking between melancholy and a quest for meaning, the piece explores human dilemmas and intimate wounds. Around Nicolas Bouchaud, an exceptional distribution hollows the paradoxes of characters more occupied to dream than to accomplish.
IntentionThe young doctor Anton Tchekhov, aged 27, began to produce a piece that would go against everything together. He goes to war against idealism as well as positivist materialism and declares that “his purpose is to make a stone two strokes (kill two birds with one stone): to paint life as it is while showing how far it is from the ideal life”. And what person chooses Chekhov to take up the challenge? A being who seems all occupied to observe his inner world became incomprehensible and hostile. He doesn’t even pretend to fight. “What to do?” Chekhov's pieces seem to ask this question unrelentingly. He did not know in which futile, disappointing and complicated world he put his feet, and to which world, the same, subtle, demanding and secret he confided his writings. It is as much to our research work as to our imagination as an artist that the task is entrusted to represent the symptoms, the lapsus, the ordinary pathology that we no longer see, to “exit from the circle of fascination” and habit, to invent the forms describing the most ordinary of the dramas and the most funny of the farces: the last two years of the life of Ivanov.
