Scaramuccia
We are in 1645, on the island of Crete then strategic for the Venetian maritime empire. While the fifth Turkish-Venean war is being prepared, Pantalone de’ Bisognosi, a merchant on the island, organizes the marriage of his daughter Ortensia with the rich Don Alonso. But in Venice, Don Alonso crossed the road of Scaramuccia, Napolitan badly, and his faithful servant Arlecchino. A quarrel bursts, Don Alonso is defeated and dies. Scaramuccia fled, chased by Flavia, in love with Don Alonso and eager for revenge.
After the success of “Arlecchino muto per spavento”, the Italian troupe of the Stivalaccio Teatro explores the world of Scaramuccia, an iconic character of the “Commedia dell’arte”. Quiproquos, duels, songs and improvisations give each scene an irresistible energy, recalling the timeless and universal strength of this art: a theatre that speaks to all, where the body is at stake, where laughter is a partner, a theatre rich of humanity and emotions. In this Mediterranean, where the millennia of history and languages are intertwined, a story of love, jealousy, and wars is spread. An extraordinary journey, vibrating tribute to the "Commedia dell'arte", made of ancient masks, high seas ships and solid walls on the island of Crete.
Intention
Our task, to us, actors "dell'arte", is to respond to the evils of our existence and the injustices of our time, with the grimace grotesque of the masks. Raising the tyrants, making fun of the powerful and, ultimately, laughing at our own vices and flaws. The game, for us, is always to propose, through the distorting lens of the comedy, a fairer vision of the world, a ray of light that can make us see an exit door. But the tragedy is always there, in a hurry, ready to emerge from one moment to another. The comedy knows, and walks on the wire like a balancing player, attentive to not falling, playing perpetually at cache-cache with the "take seriously". But then, what about this war that hovers over us, women and men of this millennium, just as it planted above the heads of the actors of the seventeenth century? The challenge is launched. Let us put our masks, shake our dusty caps, and let us start to the unknown.Marco Zoppello
